Of NOTE

The article shown below appeared in the 5/6/1994 Sports section of the HARTFORD COURANT (page F6).....

A few years back, Ed Mack joined a golf league.  It was easy to stick his clubs in the trunk of his car, but when he began to take the bus to work, lugging a bag became a bit more difficult.

So he picked one club - a 7-iron - and took that with him.  The habit stuck and Mack, the Bacon Academy-Colchester golf coach, still plays every hole  - and puts - with his trusty 7-iron.

Mack, whose team team members regularly beat him during practice at Chanticlair Golf Course in Colchester, leaves the technical aspects of the game to Bacon assistant coach Mike Frey.  "I'm not a golfer myself." Mack said.  "More like the driver.  He's the technician."

Mack is also one of the organizing forces behind Bacon's team.  Last year was the first year Bacon had a varsity team, and its best player, Jim Baronowki, shot 73 to win the Division II individual championship.  The team formed too late to play a COC schedule, so it played independently.  Glastonbury, Berlin, St. Paul-Bristol, Conard-West Hartford - all were Bacon opponents last year and Bacon finished 13-10.

The team, which is not funded by the school, supports itself.  Team members each buy membership at Chanticlair, their home course (last year, they played all 23 matches at away sites; this year, they will play seven at home, seven away).  Mack solicited donations from Colchester businesses; some people donated equipment and balls.  Mack and Frey volunteer their time to coach.

Baon is 4-2-1 with a 185 average.  Baranowski graduated, as did Mack's older son David, but seniors Jeff McGrath and Ben Weekes returned.  McGrath is Bacon's best player, but without Weekes, the program might not have come into existence.  Weekes' initialinterest got the ball rolling.  Sophomores Brian Lowery and Chris Herboldt are Nos. 3 and 4; sophomores Greg Joslin, Joe Fuimara, Rick Parkes and freshman Greg Mack, Ed's younger son, alternate in the fifth spot.

Last year, Bacon qualified for the Division II playoffs with a 175,  This year, the team will play in the new Division III.
