About Me

How it Started...

Back in 1990 I used to play in a women's golf league at Travelers Insurance.  When driving to work was my means of commuting, it was easy to plop my golf bag in the car and play on Wednesday nite in the golf league at Goodwin GC in Hartford.

However, on one very hot summer nite (near 100 degrees) in July while driving home after work in heavy summer traffic, I got stuck in the heavy shore traffic mess and a trip of normally 30-minutes took me almost 3-hours of stop and go traffic.  NOTE: this was the summer they were repaving the RTE 2 highway from Hartford to Norwich, CT.  It was my good fortune to drive home in the middle of this repaving effort on Friday nite.

Well, while during this drive home I made a resolution I would no longer drive to work and on Monday morning would begin taking the commuter bus to work from Colchester....the next Monday, I hoped on the commuter bus and purchased my monthly commuter bus pass when I got into work and NEVER drove to work again!

My Dilemma...

Come my next league nite to play I had to make a choice as to what I was going to do as I could not lug a golfbag on the commuter bus.  So I decided to play with only one club...now the choice was which club to use.  After much consideration, I selected the 7-iron as my club of choice.  Why you ask?  Well it was mid-range so I had some distance off the tee but my key issue was putting....fortunately,  my youngest son, Greg, had just purchased a Tiger Shark 7-iron from a golf ad he saw and it had a flat surface on the reverse side of the head....hence, I would put left-handed with my right-handed Tiger Shark club...that would prove to be interesting.....NOTE: Greg had tried the club after he purchased it but did not like it....hence how I got use of the club....

Well you can imagine the faces of the three women I teamed up with that Wednesday nite...Questions flew as to why I only had one club.  After answering their questions I played my first round with my 7-iron...not that badly either if I must say so...And have contined to do so to this day...with some success, I might say!

And the saga continues...

In 1993, I began a new quest with my 7-iron....I became my town high school's (Bacon Academy HS) volunteer golf coach...and that's a story I willl share personally when you and I have the opporunity to play a round of golf someday...

But if you are interested in hearing it sooner just read The Hartford Courant newespaper, June 8, 1993 edition....just look for the OF NOTE piece on page C-3 in the sports section of the paper...

During my hiatus at Bacon Academy (1993-1995), I held my own with the school coaches in the COC conference with my 7-iron play and was awarded a "homemade" golf bag by the Portland HS golf team at our conference team championships at Twin Hills GC during the team awards ceremony at the conclusion of play that day.  NOTE: the golf bag was made out of a picture mailing cylinder with a strap....just to hold my 7-iron.  I stilll have that bag as a momento of my coaching days at Bacon...if you want to see just stop by my house....
